Screen agency taps Morris, Ward, Thompson
LONDON — EM Media, the Nottingham-based regional screen agency in Blighty, has appointed Elstree Studios m.d. Roger Morris, Wavelength Films topper Lucy Ward and Bill Thompson, chair of the Cambridge Film Trust, to its board. The appointments come after the expansion of EM Media’s geographical remit since the demise of Screen East last September. The three industryites have been co-opted to the board in an advisory capacity as part of a move to ensure full representation from the East of England. EM Media’s support now extends to film and media professionals based in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, and several towns: Bedford, Luton, Peterborough, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock. Morris, Ward and Thompson will have full voting rights on all investment decisions to both the East Midlands and the East of England, and will attend regular board meetings alongside EM Media board chair Lisa Opie and fellow directors Mike Blair, Marc Booth, helmer Stephen Frears, producer and Number 9 topper Elizabeth Karlsen, Revolver Entertainment’s David Shear, Jeremy Gawade and Dr. Lisa Mooney-Smith. The new appointments are on an initial fixed-term basis until Oct. 1, when new umbrella organization Creative England is due to takeover the existing regional screen agencies — which promote filmmaking and film development within their areas — in Blighty. Creative England, which is set to have hubs in the North, Midlands and the South, has yet to unveil final plans for its structure and has still not announced who will be heading up these three hubs going forward. Regional screen agencies were handed a 29% cut in funding in the last financial year and uncertainty plagues the future of many of the existing eight agencies. One agency that is secure is Film London, which has taken on additional duties, including managing the British Film Commission, which is responsible for globally promoting the U.K. as a place to lense films.
