Mike Cahill feature was picked up by Fox Searchlight

As one of the more celebrated titles at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, helmer Mike Cahill’s “Another Earth” was awarded the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film prize.

Fest’s kudo, which carries with it a $20,000 cash award, is given to an outstanding feature film “focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character.”

“Another Earth,” which got picked up by Fox Searchlight for worldwide rights, tells the story of a young woman just accepted to MIT, who while looking at a newly-discovered planet, accidentally kills a mother and her child in a car accident. The sci-fi romancer stars Brit Marling, who also produced and co-wrote the pic with Cahill, and William Mapother as the accident’s surviving husband/father.

The award is a part of the Sundance Institute Science-in-Film Initiative, from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “Another Earth” was selected as the winning film by a committee of film and science professionals “for its original use of subtly rendered scientific concept … the explore he themes of remorse and forgiveness.”

Cahill’s “Another Earth” joins previously awarded pics, including last year’s “Obselidia,” from director Diane Bell.
