Edgar Ramirez and Juliette Binoche will star in up-and-coming French helmer Marion Laine’s romantic drama “A Monkey on my Shoulder.”
“Monkey,” which is a working title, is produced by Christine Gozlan’s Thelma Films and Catherine Bozorgan’s Manchester Films, who previously teamed on Bertrand Blier’s “The Clink of Ice.”
Nathanael Karmitz’ Paris-based Mk2 will co-produce and handle French distribution and international sales.
Set in the South of France, pic turns on two surgeons whose passionate relationship is turned upside down by an unexpected pregnancy.
“It’s a melodrama dealing with universal themes,” said Karmitz, adding he was excited to see Ramirez and Binoche as an onscreen couple. “The fact that it takes place in the medical world also brings a extra layer to the film that should lure international audiences.”
Laine, who previously helmed Sandrine Bonnaire starrer “A Simple Heart,” co-penned the script with Anne Le Ny.
Pic will start lensing on Oct. 24 in Marseilles and will go on to film in Latin America.
Binoche recently wrapped David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis,” while Ramirez, who earned an Emmy nom this year for his perf in Olivier Assayas’ “Carlos,” will next appear in “Clash of the Titans 2.”
