DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Kung Fu’ Cannes plan

Studio to hold press junket, screening during fest

After screening the original “Kung Fu Panda” out of competition at Cannes in 2008, DreamWorks Animation plans to bring its prequel to the festival as well, though not in any official capacity. DWA has decided to hold its international press junket for “Kung Fu Panda 2” during the fest, inviting select press to see the full feature and interview the film’s voice cast.

“Kung Fu Panda 2” opens on May 26 in the U.S. and several other territories but not until early to mid-June in most European markets.

Cannes has long been a favorite publicity platform for DWA topper Jeffrey Katzenberg, dating back to his Disney days, when such toons as “The Little Mermaid” and “Beauty and the Beast” unspooled out of competition. In 2008, DWA staged a massive publicity event for the first “Kung Fu Panda,” effectively launching the franchise with a showdown between actor Jack Black and dozens of costumed pandas outside the Carlton Hotel.
