DGA awards bring out the love

Spielberg, Hooper on hand for Saturday's Guild ceremony

It was a night for storytelling — both at the podium and onscreen — at the 63rd Directors Guild of America Awards at the Grand Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland.

The DGA is celebrating its 75th anniversary, and to start off the new year, the guild created “DGA Moments in Time,” informative videos about important moments not only for the organization, but in film history.

One of the planned presenters, Martin Scorsese, could not make it Saturday night due to illness. Steven Spielberg stepped in to introduce Scorsese’s assigned video, adding, “He’s making his first 3D movie. I’m certain that’s what gave him pneumonia.”

Emcee Carl Reiner began the evening by requesting that everyone turn on their cellphones. To quizzical expressions he replied, “I’m not kidding. There’s nothing that’s going to happen here as important as the phone call you might be getting.”

Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter amused the crowd with their presentation for “The King’s Speech” director Tom Hooper. Later that evening, when Hooper won, he said, “I only wish we had the other corner of the triangle of man-love, which is Colin, me and Geoffrey Rush, so we could fully celebrate.” Turning to Bonham Carter, he added, “And Helena, thank you for managing to hide your jealousy of the triangle of man-love when you were on camera.”
