‘Devil’s Island’ to open Goteborg

Psychological thriller 'Corridor' to close Swedish fest

Norwegian director Marius Holst’s “King of Devil’s Island,” which stars Stellan Skarsgard, will open the Goteborg Film Festival, Sweden’s largest film event, on Jan. 28, organizers announced Tuesday.

Holst’s fourth feature, which receives its international preem at the fest, is a gritty tale based on the true story of an uprising at a youth detention center near Oslo. Pic focuses on a new arrival who is determined to do anything to escape and encourages the inmates to revolt against the sadistic regime.

Holst came to international attention in 1995 when his first film “Cross my Heart and Hope to Die” was in competition in Berlin.

“Devil’s Island,” which is produced by 4 1/2 Fikson, the company Holst runs with Pal Sletaune, was released in Norway mid-December.

The pic is one of eight competing for the Dragon Award for Nordic film, which comes with a cash prize worth nearly $150,000.

Fest closer, screening Feb. 5, is “Corridor,” a psychological thriller written and directed by Johan Lundborg and John Storm, focusing on a med student who gets mixed up with a neighbor and her jealous boyfriend. It is one of five in the Rookie project, the Swedish Film Institute’s program for first-time directors. The fest’s entire program will be unveiled Jan. 11.
