Clooney starrer beats Thanksgiving glut with Nov. 18 rollout
Fox Searchlight has moved up the release of “The Descendants” from Nov. 23 to Nov. 18.
Alexander Payne directed the George Clooney-toplined pic, which also stars Judy Greer and Shailene Woodley.
Date change will allow the film to avoid the crowded Thanksgiving frame, which so far includes “The Muppets,” “Piranha 3DD,” “Arthur Christmas” and “A Dangerous Method.”
Searchlight bought the rights to Kaui Hart Hemmings’ dark-humored debut novel for Jim Burke, Payne and Jim Taylor to produce through their Ad Hominem banner in 2007.
Nat Faxon, Jim Rash and Payne penned the script.
Story revolves around an indifferent husband and father of two girls who is forced to confront his past when his wife suffers a boating accident off of Waikiki Beach, and he then has to decide whether to sell his family’s land, handed down from Hawaiian royalty.
Pic recently screened at Telluride and is slated to close the New York Film Fest on Oct. 16.
