'Habanastation' is helmer's debut

The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry has chosen helmer Ian Padron’s feature debut “Habanastation” as its foreign language Oscar hopeful.

An awards committee comprised of helmers Manuel Perez, Fernando Perez and film editor Manuel Iglesias selected the buddy movie about two boys from contrasting social backgrounds.

Pic won the best-of-the-fest award at documaker Michael Moore’s Traverse City Film Festival this year.

The deadline for countries to send in Oscar submissions is Monday. The 84th Academy Awards will be held Feb. 26 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.
