Helmer Brand's 'Default' is its first English-lingo pic
RCN Cine, the film unit of Colombian web RCN, has made its first English-language pic as part of its bid for the U.S. and international market.
“Default” shot for three weeks in Los Angeles with L.A.-based Colombian helmer Simon Brand directing.
Low-budget drama, set on an airplane, follows a found-footage format. David Oyelowo and Greg Callahan lead the cast.
Brand co-wrote the screenplay with Jim Wolf and Dan Bence. Colombia’s Amazona Films co-produced. RCN Films and Screen Gems have been developing “Operation Checkmate,” a drama about the 2008 rescue of Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt from guerillas. Greg Shapiro (“The Hurt Locker”) is co-producing. They are in advanced talks with an American helmer to replace Brand, who ankled over creative differences.
Around nine pics out of a dozen hitting Colombian screens this year are backed by RCN. These include “Colores de la montana” (Colors of the Mountain), “En coma,” (Coma) and “El jefe” (The Boss).
RCN Cine’s production services unit, Shoot Colombia, worked on Paul Haggis’ “The Next Three Days” when it shot in Colombia.
