Cinetic, Independent join forces

Pair will collaborate on worldwide sales

John Sloss and Bart Walker’s Cinetic Media has linked up with Luc Roeg’s London-based Independent to collaborate on worldwide sales for their projects.

The joint venture, dubbed Cinetic at Independent, will begin international sales at the Berlinale’s European Film Market for Cinetic’s existing pics, including Banksy docu “Exit Through the Gift Shop,” Diego Luna’s Sundance and Cannes player “Abel,” Jesse Eisenberg starrer “Holy Rollers” and Kelly Reichardt’s “Meek’s Cutoff,” starring Michelle Williams, which preemed in Toronto and is skedded for an April release in the U.S. through Oscilloscope.

The venture will also see Cinetic domestically rep Independent’s slate, which includes Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” backed by BBC Films and toplining John C. Reilly and Tilda Swinton.

Pic, which is in post and has already secured distribution in Blighty (Artificial Eye) and Benelux (Wild Bunch), will be shopped to buyers at the Berlinale.

“We have always had an orientation to maximizing world values and securing the best distribution possible throughout the world for our filmmakers and projects,” Sloss and Walker said. “International distributors and financiers have been at the center of many of our films. In our friend Luc Roeg and his team, we have found both a shared commitment and a shared sensibility.”

The joint venture will be a continuing partnership with no specific end date.

Cinetic has largely been a source for finance and sales of independent projects. Previous Cinetic Intl. topper Shebnem Askin-Schreger left in July to join Fox Intl. Prods.

At Sundance last month, the company negotiated the sale of world rights for “Pariah” to Focus Features. Last year, it was involved in securing finance and domestic distribution for “The Kids Are All Right.”

Independent is developing a number of book-based features including Bernard Cornwell’s “Azincourt,” Dean King’s “Skeletons on the Zahara” and John Banville’s “The Sea.”
