Release planned for Barkin film

Grassroots distributor Cinemad Presents has snagged rights to Ellen Barkin starrer “Shit Year” for U.S. theatrical release in the fall.

Writer-director Cam Archer’s pic, which preemed at Cannes in 2010, features Barkin as an actress who find herself adrift when she quits performing. Luke Grimes, Melora Waters and Bob Einstein also appear in the film, which has screened at other fests including AFI, Hamptons and Provincetown.

Produced by Lars Knudsen and Jay van Hoy (“Beginners”), “Shit Year” is exec produced by Tory Lenosky, Rabinder Sira, Dallas Brennan and Chris Gilligan.

National release of the film kicks off Sept. 21 at IFC Center, with stints at venues across the country to follow.Launched earlier this year, distributor is an offshoot of film zine Cinemad, which began in 1998 and continues as a blog under another name. “Shit Year” joins a Cinemad slate that also includes “Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then,” “Summer Pasture” and “Orbit.”
