SHANGHAI — Chinese censors have given the thumbs up to French-Vietnamese helmer Tran Anh Hung’s “Norwegian Wood.”
The move clears the path for a late August release for the adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s best-selling novel, said Esther Yeung of sales company Fortissimo Wednesday.
A deal was closed with local distrib Shanghai Huayu at the Shanghai Intl. Film Festival, where Tran is serving as a jury member.
The decision is a surprise as the pic has a dark theme, and features sex scenes and suicides, but the censors apparently requested few changes.
Pic is screening at the Shanghai festival on Sunday and Japanese thesp Kenichi Matsuyama will be attending.
