Catherine Keener on Jonah Hill in ‘Moneyball’

SAG Preview 2011: Actors on Actors

“All of Jonah’s prior work seems like practice for what he does in ‘Moneyball.’ Bennett Miller’s movie is fantastic and unexpected, and it needed a fantastic and unexpected performance from the actor who plays Peter Brand, the guileless fresh-out-of-college kid who’s pilfered from his first job crunching players as mere numbers for another team. Brad Pitt’s general manager Billy Beane steals him, and together they pull off something that changed the game of baseball. Billy and Peter need each other to reach that wild territory. Jonah’s a great actor, but his performance in ‘Moneyball’ is different. It’s funny, yes, but quiet and filled with a generosity of spirit toward everything and everyone he comes in contact with in a scene. He played ball with Brad Pitt. They were a team, and as a result caught lightning in a bottle together, unexpectedly. Although I’m not surprised.”
