‘Car’ drives to screens

Fall release for Tribeca documentary

WestMidWest Prods. and distributor Area23a will partner to distribute docu “Revenge of the Electric Car” this fall, in a nontraditional release that will mix theatrical runs in major cities with event-based screenings.

Pic from helmer and co-writer Chris Paine bowed earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival and will screen as the closer of the 2011 Silverdocs fest. The pic, a followup to Paine’s 2006 outing “Who Killed the Electric Car?” chronicles automakers’ race to claim consumers as the new generation of electric cars becomes more commonplace.

Part of the release strategy allows for moviegoers to make online requests to see the film in their market, with the movie going first to the areas that expressed the most interest. Orgs such as Sierra Club and Electric Drive Transportation Assn. will help promote the film.

“Revenge,” a WestMidWest production, was produced by co-writer P.G. Morgan and Jessie Deeter with Stefano Durdic as exec producer. Recent releases from Area23a, founded by Richard Abramowitz (“Exit Through the Gift Shop”) and Kirt Eftekhar, have included “Best Worst Movie” and “Wretches and Jabberers.”
