Busan fest opener sold to Japan

Showbox Mediaplex presells 'Always'

BUSAN — As one of Asia’s main film fests got under way in Busan, South Korea, local distrib Showbox Mediaplex announced that it has pre-sold the fest’s opening film, helmer Song Il-gon’s “Always,” to Japan’s Pony Canyon.

Pic is a love story of a former boxer and a blind telemarketeer, starring Korean Wave star So Ji-sub who has a solid fan-base in Asia with the hit TV drama “I Am Sorry, I Love You.” It also features Han Hyo-joo, who swept the country’s Drama Awards last year in period TV series “Dong-yi.”

Pic is scheduled to be theatrically released Oct. 20 in South Korea.

Showbox will also screen “The Front Line” at BIFF, as the fest is known since the change from Pusan to Busan in South Korea’s use of the Romanized spelling. The pic is South Korea’s entry in the foreign-language movie category at the Oscars.
