Duo win docu screenplay award
The Writers Guild of America East has named Nancy Buirski and Susie Ruth Powell as recipients of its fourth Documentary Screenplay Award at the AFI-Discovery Channel Silverdocs Festival. The duo wrote “The Loving Story,” depicting the story of Richard and Mildred Loving, the couple behind the 1967 Supreme Court ruling overturning anti-miscegenation laws in the United States. Bernardo Ruiz (“Gardens of Paradise”) presented the kudo at the festival’s awards ceremony held Saturday in Silver Spring, Md. The award carries a prize of $1,000. In addition, the winner is granted a five-year membership in the WGA East Nonfiction Writers Caucus. The other nominees were “Fire in Babylon,” written and directed by Stevan Riley; “Resurrect Dead,” written and produced by Jon Foy, Colin Smith; “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front,” written and edited by Matthew Hamacheck, Marshall Curry; “Catching Hell,” written and directed by Alex Gibney; “The First Movie,” directed, filmed and written by Mark Cousins; and “The Pruit-Igoe Myth,” script by Chad & Jaime Freidrichs.
