‘Breaking Dawn’ soars overseas

Fourth Twilight pic debuts with $153 million in 54 territories

Summit’s penultimate “Twilight” offering, “Breaking Dawn — Part 1,” sank its fangs into the overseas box office over the Nov. 18-20 frame, debuting with a whopping series-best $152.9 million, including previews.

The franchise’s second installment, “New Moon,” earned $132 million during its opening weekend in 2009; last year, “Eclipse” tallied $104.2 million overseas.

“Breaking Dawn” opened day-and-date with the U.S. in 54 territories, staking claim to No. 1 posts in Russia, Australia, Italy, Spain and the U.K. In Blighty, the film grossed $21.9 million, the franchise’s biggest opening so far in that country. Russian auds contributed the film’s second-best overseas weekend gross, $16.1 million.

In France, meanwhile, the pic earned $14.9 million — among the top-five debuts in the territory this year, a group that includes “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” and local title “Nothing to Declare.”

Australia ($12.8 million) saw its third-biggest 2011 opening with “Breaking Dawn,” with Italy ($12.2 million) just behind, and Spain ($11.8 million) delivering a franchise-best bow.

Summit pre-sold international rights for the pic to local distribs in all major territories.

Benefiting from counterprogramming, family pics “The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” and “Arthur Christmas” saw solid holdover grosses from a slew of international markets. “Tintin” collected an overall weekend take of $23.5 million, bringing its overseas cume to $190 million; “Arthur Christmas” grossed $5.1 million for a cume of nearly $10 million internationally.

Top market for “Tintin” was China, where the film debuted to $7.4 million, while in the U.K., “Arthur Christmas” earned $3.6 million, 6% bump in its second frame locally.
