‘Boys’ bows in Gotham

Docu celebrates landmark play

Mart Crowley and his “The Boys in the Band” are celebrated in the First Run docu “Making the Boys,” which had its preem Monday at the Tribeca Screening Room.

The 1968 play spawned the 1970 William Friedkin pic, which featured a poster with two cast members and the memorable tagline “This is Harold. This is his present.”

At the afterparty, Crowley revealed: “You know where that idea came from? I can say it now that she’s dead. I always heard that (a man) was sent to Ginger Rogers as a present. … That’s where the seed of that idea came from, and oddly, it was heterosexual and not homosexual at all.”

Is a hustler still appropriate for a birthday bash?

“Even for a children’s party at this point,” said guest Paul Rudnick.

“So much better than a sweater,” quipped Carson Kressley, host for the Marriage Equality New York event. – — Stephen Schaefer
