‘Bonsai’ dominates Toulouse

Pic takes top honors at 'Films in Progress'

BARCELONA — Chilean Cristian Jimenez’s “Bonsai” took top honors at the 19th Films in Progress, which wrapped Friday at the Rencontres Cinemas d’Amerique Latine in Toulouse, France.

Brazilian Julia Murat’s “Historias que so existem quando lembradas” nabbed the Cine Cinema Award.

Bonsai” will receive cash and post-production prizes including €10,000 ($14,000) from France’s Centre National du Cinema (CNC), sound editing to a value of $21,000 from Paris’ Mac’tari, Titra Film subtitling, and a $29,500 broadcast pre-sale to CanalSat movie channel bouquet Cine Cinema.

Jimenez’s soph feature after “Optical Illusions,” “Bonsai” adapts an Alejandro Zambra novel that follows the relationship between two literature students in Chile over the course of years. Cast includes Diego Noguera, Natalia Galgani and Trinidad Gonzalez.

“Bonsai” is co-produced by Chile’s Jirafa (60%), France’s Rouge Intl., Argentina’s Rizoma (20%) and Portugal’s Ukbar Filmes (20%). It also tapped coin from Ibero-American regional film fund, Ibermedia, and was developed at the Cannes Festival’s 20th Cinefondation Residence.

Murat’s “Historias” portrays the fictitious Brazilian village of Jotumba, once but no longer a wealthy hub of coffee plantations. It is produced by Taiga Filmes, co-produced by MPM Film, Julia Solomonoff and Bonfilm with the support of Brazil’s national film agency Ancine, Gaul’s Fonds Sud, Spain’s Ibermedia and Argentina’s film board Incaa.

Organized jointly by Toulouse’s Rencontres Cinemas and the San Sebastian Festival, the twice-yearly Films in Progress rendezvous backs pics in rough-cut seeking completion finance.

The 20th Films in Progress will unspool at September’s San Sebastian Festival.
