Helmer's next pic set for La Petite Reine
EXCLUSIVE– “Black Venus” helmer Abdellatif Kechiche is attached to direct “La Blessure,” an adaptation of French novelist Francois Begaudeau’s latest work, “La Blessure, la vrai.”The project is set up at Thomas Langmann’s Paris-based La Petite Reine, whose “The Artist” hits will screen in competition today. Begaudeau’s “The Class,” directed by Laurent Cantet, won 2008’s Palme d’Or. Co-produced by Orange’s Studio 37, “Blessure” recalls the 1986 summer holiday of a teenage narrator intent on losing his virginity. Kechiche is writing the adaptation, Langmann said. Shooting in France and French, “Blessure” is skedded to go into production by year’s end. A second Kechiche project at Petite Reine, “Police Francaise,” an adaptation of the book “Omerta dans la police”; and a “Carlos”-style, three-pic miniseries, have been pushed back. “It’s taking longer to write,” Langmann said. Director-producer Claude Berri’s son, Langmann broke through with two 2008 Gallic tentpoles: Live action “Asterix at the Olympic Games” and Jean-Francois Richet’s “Mesrine,” a high-octane two-part gangster thriller. “The Artist” is a black-and-white 1927 Hollywood-set love story shot in silent-movie visual style, about a star who, when the talkies arrive, can’t utter a word. Pic features a French and U.S. cast. “People want to see original movies,” Langmann said of the pic’s daring concept. Also on Petite Reine’s 2011-12 slate, Francois Cluzet will star in “Colt 45,” from Fabrice du Welz (“Vinyan”) as a weapons-expert cop who discovers his killer instinct; 1944-set “The War of the Buttons,” from Christophe Barratier (“The Chorus”), with Laetitia Casta and Guillaume Canet, is shooting.
