Annaud's pic stars Banderas, Pinto
Antonio Banderas and Frieda Pinto starrer “Black Gold,” helmed by Jean-Jacques Annaud, will world preem at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, which runs Oct. 25-29.
The $55 million-budget pic, co-produced by Tarak Ben Ammar’s Quinta Communications and the Doha Film Institute, is the first major international co-production for DFI and Qatar.
Tahar Rahim, Mark Strong, Riz Ahmed and Liya Kebede also topline scribe Menno Meyjes’ adaptation of author Hans Reusch’s “The Great Thirst.”
Story follows the rivalry of two young emirs against the backdrop of 1930s Arab states at the peak of the oil boom.
The pic’s battle scenes were shot in the desert dunes of Mesaieed and Shamal in Qatar.
“Our relationship with the Doha Film Institute is far more than a financial deal,” said Ben Ammar. “We share a real common view on the kind of films we want to make together.”
