Beresford traps ‘Mouse’

Helmer preps biopic about Oz war hero Nancy Wake

Helmer Bruce Beresford is set to make “The White Mouse,” a biopic about Australian war hero Nancy Wake.

Pic will be produced by Peter Glover and Sue Milliken. Beresford is arranging funding and casting with an eye on a mid-2012 start date.

Wake, who died this past weekend at age 98, was Oz’s most decorated servicewoman and worked with the French Resistance to save downed Allied airmen in France. She has already been the subject of books and a mini in the 1980s, as well as being the inspiration for the Cate Blanchett-starrer “Charlotte Gray.”

The news comes as Beresford confirmed his next project will be the Screen Australia-backed “Banjo & Matilda,” about another real-life Aussie hero, bush poet Banjo Paterson.Beresford’s “Dancer,” the story of Chinese dancer Li Cunxin, was the highest-grossing Aussie pic of 2009.
