BAFTA unveils Rising Star nominees

Shortlist includes Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts unveiled the nominees for its Rising Star award Monday, with Gemma Arterton, Tom Hardy, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone up for the accolade.

Rising Stars may be a misnomer for this group, who have all made a big impact on the industry in the past 12 months.

Former Bond girl Arterton, who starred in Stephen Frears’ “Tamara Drewe” last year, is on the longlist of BAFTA noms in the lead actress category, announced Friday. Thesp also featured in Warner Bros.’ “Clash of the Titans” and Disney’s “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.” She is set to star in Michael Winterbottom’s bigscreen adaptation of Martin Amis’ novel “London Fields.”

Hardy, who featured in Christopher Nolan’s “Inception,” is shooting Working Title’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” an adaptation of author John Le Carre’s 1974 spy thriller.

Garfield received a Golden Globe nom for his perf in David Fincher’s “The Social Network” and recently landed the role of Peter Parker in “Spider-Man 4,” skedded for a 2012 release through Sony. He was also seen last year in Fox Searchlight’s “Never Let Me Go,” produced by Brit shingle DNA Films.

Johnson ninja-kicked his way to the bigscreen last year with his perf in “Kick-Ass.” He also starred as the young John Lennon in Sam Taylor-Wood’s “Nowhere Boy” and is in production on Irish drama “Albert Nobbs,” starring alongside “Alice in Wonderland” thesp Mia Wasikowska and Irish thesps Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Brendan Gleeson.

Stone, the only non-Brit up for the award, featured in last year’s “Easy A,” “Marma-duke” and “Movie 43.” She will join Garfield in “Spider-Man 4.” Winner will be announced at the BAFTA awards Feb. 13.
