Helmer selected as guest director of AFI Fest

Pedro Almodovar has been selected as the guest director of AFI Fest 2011, and will curate a sidebar program of films that have inspired his work. The Spanish helmer will also present a 25th anniversary screening of “Law of Desire.”

Last year was the first year the AFI Fest invited a guest director to preside over the event, selecting AFI Conservatory alum David Lynch.

“I have an enormous respect for AFI Fest, which has always been very generous with me, so I am very honored to be its guest artistic director this year,” said Almodovar. Over the years, the AFI fest has programmed numerous Almodovar pics., including “Volver” and “Broken Embraces.” In 2004, he received a tribute and retrospective. coinciding with a gala screening of “Bad Education.”

“Almodovar’s work embodies the cross-pollination of cinematic influences that fuel contemporary world cinema,” said Jacqueline Lyanga, festival director. AFI Fest will take place Nov. 3-10 in Hollywood venues including the Chinese Theater, the Egyptian and the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.
