Al Pacino attached to Matisse biopic

Deepa Mehta set to helm Escape Artists' indie

Exclusive: Al Pacino is attached to play French artist Henri Matisse in Escape Artists’ “Masterpiece.”

Deepa Mehta (“Water”) is attached to direct a script by Donald Martin.

Pic is based on the true story of Matisse’s relationship with his nurse Monique Bourgeois, also the painter’s model and muse.

Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Steve Tisch and Jason Blumenthal will produce; Chris Coggins co-produces.

Project is currently in development and no start date has been set, though producers will soon begin casting the two female leads.

Pacino recently won a Golden Globe for his performance as Jack Kevorkian in HBO’s “You Don’t Know Jack.” Actor will soon be seen alongside Channing Tatum in Dito Montiel’s cop drama “The Son of No One,” which Anchor Bay picked up out of Sundance. He’s also set to play controversial record producer Phil Spector in an untitled HBO movie from writer-director David Mamet.

ICM reps Pacino and Mehta, who is also repped by Echo Lake Management.
