BERLIN — Jan Schomburg’s German drama “Above Us Only Sky” won the Europa Cinemas Label as best European film on Friday.
The film, which screens in the Berlinale’s Panorama sidebar, revolves around a woman looking for new love after discovering her husband had a secret double life.
“Jan Schomburg’s film is an exceptionally well-made film — a very powerful, contemporary story about coming to terms with loss,” the jury said in a statement, adding that actress Sandra Hueller “gives a really extraordinary performance.”
Produced by Claudia Steffen and Christoph Friedel of Pandora Film Produktion, “Above Us Only Sky,” which Schomburg directed from his own script, stars Hueller, Georg Friedrich and Felix Knopp. Bavaria Film International is handling worldwide rights.
The Europa Cinemas
Label is handed out annually in Berlin to a film in the Panorama section by a jury of four exhibitors, complementing similar awards at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, Giornate degli Autori in Venice and Karlovy Vary.
