‘300’ scribe Johnstad re-drafts ‘Gunslinger’

James Mangold directs pic for New Regency

New Regency has tapped “300” scribe Kurt Johnstad to write a new draft of “The Gunslinger,” the story of a former Texas ranger seeking vengeance for the murder of his brother.

Cathy Konrad and Andrew Lazar will produce with James Mangold directing. Navid McIlhargey oversees the project for New Regency.

Project will be the sophomore pairing for New Regency and Mangold. The duo collaborated on last year’s Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz-toplined “Knight and Day.”

John Hlavin penned the first script.

Pic marks a return to the Western genre for its director, James Mangold, who directed Lionsgate’s 2007 release “3:10 to Yuma.”

New Regency, housed at 20th Century Fox, has earned the studio more than $5 billion since it began producing pics for Fox in 1998.
