Venice revamps Controcampo

Fest adds docu, shorts categories

The Venice Film Festival is revamping and expanding its Controcampo Italiano section dedicated to new trends in Italian cinema.

The competitive sidebar, launched by fest topper Marco Mueller two years ago, is adding prizes for documentaries and shorts to its existing Controcampo award for best feature.

Mueller said he wanted to “diversify Controcampo’s experience as a showcase laboratory” in its effort to attempt to “anticipate the most vibrant tendencies in Italian film.”

After two editions, Controcampo has become a launch pad for fresh Italo talent, yielding subsequently sold titles such as Susanna Nicchiarelli’s coming-of-ager “Cosmonaut,” Aureliano Amadei’s Iraq-set “20 Sigarette” and Roberta Torre’s “Lost Kisses,” Italy’s only Sundance entry this year.

As previously announced, Torre will preside over the Controcampo Italiano jury.

The 68th edition of the Venice fest will run Aug. 31 to Sept. 10.
