‘Separation’ takes Sydney prize

Iranian drama looks at marriage breakdown

SYDNEY — Iranian drama “A Separation” by helmer Asghar Farhadhi has won Down Under’s biggest film prize, the Sydney Film Festival’s $A60,000 ($63,000) Competition Prize.

The film, which also won the Golden Bear at Berlin in February, tells the story of a couple whose marriage breaks down when one wants to emigrate while the other chooses to stay in the country.

Jury prexy Chen Kaige announced the winner on Sunday at a lunch attended by the other — jury members helmer Sarah Watt, thesp Kerry Fox and Blighty producer Mark Herbert as well as local thesps Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward.

“This film looks beneath the surface of relations between men and women in Iran in a way that raises questions about law, freedom and feminine and masculine honor,” said Chen. “It is an extremely courageous film, successfully executed.”
