Hugh Grant boards ‘The Pirates’

Thesp to lend voice to stop-motion Aardman 3D toon

Hugh Grant has signed on to do the lead voice in “The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists,” the new stop-motion 3D toon produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation.

Grant, starring in his first animated role, voices a bearded pirate captain who travels far and wide in a quest to win the much coveted Pirate of the Year Award.

“Pirates” is helmed by Peter Lord, a founding partner of Aardman and the director of “Chicken Run” (with Nick Park), and is co-directed by Jeff Newitt.

Gideon Defoe pens the script, based upon his tomes.

Lord, David Sproxton and Julie Lockhart produce while Carla Shelley exec produces.
