Guoqing Gu, executive chairman, Huaxia Film

Dealmakers Impact Report 2011

As head of China’s second-biggest distribution network, Gu is a key player in forming the rules and regulations that determine how films are distributed in China, and has been involved in the distribution of more than 80 movies. He also advises on World Trade Organization regulations. Gu advocates a two-way street between China and other countries and wants to “open channels for Chinese movies to air globally and offer international audiences a better understanding of Chinese culture.”

KEY DEALS: In August, Huaxia teamed with Relativity Media and Chinese production, finance and distribution shingle Sky Land in a $100 million venture, which, like Legendary’s Legendary East initiative, signals a new era of Sino-American cooperation in production and distribution. Relativity hailed the deal as giving it access to China’s rapidly expanding film market. From Beijing’s point of view, the pact promotes China’s soft power abroad.
