‘Devil’s Island’ tops at Nordic fest

Marius Holst's prison pic wins award for best feature at Nordic Film Days

LONDON — Norwegian pics took home the lion’s share of prizes at Europe’s largest festival of Nordic cinema, Nordic Film Days in Lubeck, Germany. Fest wrapped Sunday.

Marius Holst’s “King of Devil’s Island,” about a rebellion on a prison island in 1915, starring Stellan Skarsgard, won the NDR Award for best feature film, which comes with a E12,500 ($17,203) cash prize. It also won the audience award, which comes with $6,881.

The jury, headed by German actress Catherine Flemming, said Holst “succeeded in transforming a historical event into a gripping cinema experience with a powerful narrative: thrilling, authentic and emotional at every given moment.”

For the first time ever, a Norwegian film, Hilde Korsaeth’s “My Beloved — A Film About Love and Courage,” took the fest’s docu prize, which comes with $3,441. Korsaeth’s film follows a couple after the man is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Another Norwegian pic, Anders Overgard’s “Coming Home,” drew the children’s jury prize, which comes with $6,881. The film centers on a city girl who moves to the country and develops a love of horses.

Germany is Norwegian cinema’s most important foreign market, with 12 Norwegian pics set to be released theatrically in the territory this year.

Sweden’s “I Miss You,” helmed by Anders Gronros, took the children’s and youth film prize, which comes with $6,881. The story centers on a 15-year-old who has to come to terms with the accidental death of her twin sister.

Absurdist comedy “Either Way,” from Icelandic helmer Hafsteinn G. Sigurdsson, won the Baltic Films Prize.

The Interfilm Church Prize, which comes with $3,441, went to the Finnish literary adaptation “Sixpack Movie,” helmed by Ville Jankeri.
