Indian Film Fest kicks off

The Arclight turned into Bollywood for the 9th annual Indian Film Fest Los Angeles, which opened Tuesday. With large canopies of brightly colored silk over head, saris and kaftans replaced the usual movie attire of jeans and T-shirts below. Afterwards at La Vida, Gulshan Grover, star of the opening-night selection, “I Am Kalam,” asked the obvious question, “You have the people that say they love Indian film, they love Indian food, they love Indian saris, but where are they?” Which he then answered: “This festival supports Indian film, and people show they support it by coming.”

IFFLA’s Christina Marouda agreed. “The most gratifying thing is showing independent Indian filmmakers people would not otherwise see. The Bollywood stuff is great, but I love having first-time filmmakers who go on to make films that open the fest years later.”
