Berlin Panorama reveals 24 titles

Sidebar highlights art-house film

Lee Tamahori’s “The Devil’s Double” and John Michael McDonagh’s “The Guard” are among two dozen titles announced Monday that will unspool in the Berlin Film Festival’s Panorama sidebar.

“Devil’s Double,” starring Dominic Cooper, centers on a man forced to become a double for Saddam Hussein’s sadistic son, Uday. Irish comedy-thriller “The Guard” stars Brendan Gleeson, Don Cheadle and Mark Strong.

The 24 titles make up just under half of the 50 films that will be presented in Panorama. Documentaries, showcased in the Panorama’s Dokumente section, again make up about a third of the lineup.

Also screening in the world arthouse section are Jose Padilha’s “Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within,” a sequel to the controversial 2008 winner of the Berlinale’s Golden Bear; Abe Sylvia’s “Dirty Girl,” starring Juno Temple and Milla Jovovich; and, from Norway, Ole Giaever’s “The Mountain.”

There are three selections from South Korea: Ryoo Seung-wan’s “The Unjust,” Kim Soo-hyun’s “Ashamed” and Jeon Kyu-hwan’s “Dance Town.”

Berlin helmer Rosa von Praunheim’s “Rent Boys” unspools in the Panorama Dokumente showcase, as do Gallic director Angelique Bosio’s “The Advocate for Fagdom,” which features Bruce LaBruce, Gus Van Sant and John Waters, and Goeran Hugo Olsson’s “The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975.”

Also screening in Panorama’s main program and Panorama Special: “Mothers,” Milcho Manchevski (Macedonia/France); “Target,” Alexander Zeldovich (Russia); “Bullhead,” Michael R. Roskam (Belgium); “Ueber uns das All,” Jan Schomburg (Germany) and “The Fatherless,” Marie Kreutzer (Austria).

Also screening in Panorama Dokumente: “Brasch — Die Widersprueche sind die Hoffnung,” Christoph Rueter (Germany); “Coming Home,” Tomer Heymann (Israel); “Homo@lv,” Kaspars Goba (Latvia); “House of Shame/Chantal All Night Long,” Johanna Jackie Baier (Germany); “Khodorkovsky,” Cyril Tuschi (Germany); “Mondo Lux,” Elfi Mikesch (Germany); “! Women Art Revolution — A Secret History,” Lynn Hershman Leeson (U.S.) and “We Were Here,” David Weissman (U.S.).

A number of Panorama selections, including “Devil’s Double,” “Guard,” “Elite Squad 2,” “Black Power Mixtape” and “We Were Here,” will make their world premieres at Sundance before screening in Berlin.

The fest runs Feb. 10-20.
