‘Anyang’ wins at Jeonju

'Jean Gentil' wins international competition section

JEONJU — The Jeonju Intl. Film Festival wrapped Friday with a screening of the Korean Feature Competition winner, Park Chan-kyung’s “Anyang, Paradise City.”

The pic, which world preemed at the Rotterdam film fest, portrays the past and present of Anyang, a satellite city of Seoul, with a mix of documentary and fiction.

In the International Competition section, “Jean Gentil” won the Grand Prize Woosuk Award. Based on a true story, pic was co-helmed by husband and wife team Israel Cardenas and Laura Amelia Guzman. It tells the story of middle-aged Haitian intellectual who moves to the Dominican Republic and ends up as a construction worker.

Fest was busier than ever, despite there being fewer pics this year: 190 films from 38 countries played, compared with 208 films from 48 countries last year. Some 179 screenings out of 286 were sold out, and the seat occupancy rate was 86%. Last year’s seat occupancy rate was 83.4%.

Fest also expanded its guest list and introduced new talk programs: 144 Q&A sessions and talks were held, up 47%, compared with 98 last year.

In order to strengthen its real-time communication with audiences, the festival offered an application for smart phones, as well as issuing a daily iPad multimedia magazine.

JIFF’s industry program to promote and encourage Korean films, the 3rd Jeonju Project Market, was crowded with local industry insiders.

A total 294 participants from 125 local companies were present at the Jeonju Project Promotion, a series of pitching sessions.

Through the Industry Video Library, programmers from Dubai, Locarno, CPH:DOX and San Sebastian festivals were able to watch new Korean films.
