‘Twilight’ tops Friday B.O.

Vamp franchise continues domination of holiday frame

Stateside auds are still smitten with Summit’s bloodsuckers. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1” grossed $16.9 million yesterday.

Since its opening last Friday, “Breaking Dawn — Part 1” has earned a domestic cume of $220.2 million, $37.2 million of which has been earned since Wednesday. “Twilight’s” second installment “New Moon” made $66.3 million in this Thanksgiving five-day window in 2009, which B.O. insiders expect the penultimate installment to emulate. As of today, pic is $3.9 million behind “New Moon’s” long weekend.

Disney’s “The Muppets” took second last night with $12.3 million, up 86% from its Wednesday opening and nearly doubling its cume to $24.8 million domestically.

“Muppets” leads the pack of family fare this holiday weekend followed by Warner Bros.’ “Happy Feet Two” with $5.1 million. Sony’s “Arthur Christmas” came in around $4.6 million yesterday, with Paramount’s “Hugo” on its heels at $4.5 million.

On their Wednesday openings, “Arthur” edged out “Hugo” at $2.4 million to $1.7 million, respectively. However, in the days since, “Hugo” has tightened the gap to a domestic cume of $8.5 million to “Arthur’s” $8.8 million. Whether or not it can sustain its momentum and beat “Arthur” is hard to say, however, as family auds are notoriously difficult to predict.
