Cannes Territory Report: South Korea

The Korean film industry saw auds decrease in 2010, despite the popularity of 3D. This drop has continued in the first quarter of 2011, when the total B.O. was down 12.6% compared to the same period a year ago. But despite the gloom, local films were up 10.9% vs. the same frame a year ago led by such strong entries as “Detective K” and “Last Godfather.” Indie distribs are expecting a socko summer, with local titles on deck such as “The Frontline” (Showbox) and “Sector 7” (CJ E&M).

Top 2010 indie film: “The Man From Nowhere,” $43.6 million (CJ Entertainment)
Top 2011 indie pickups:
“The Future,” T-Cast
“Pina,” Baekdu-Daegan

“The Turin Horse,” Jeonju Intl. Film Festival
