Iceland sends ‘Volcano’ to Oscars

Film is 'coming-of-age story of a 67-year-old man'

LONDON — Iceland has selected Runar Runarsson’s feature debut “Volcano” as its entry for the foreign-language film Oscar.

The helmer has described his film as “a coming-of-age story of a 67-year-old man.” Theodor Juliusson toplines as a retired school janitor forced by a traumatic event to face up to his shortcomings and to learn to love. Margret Helga Johannsdottir plays his wife.

The film preemed in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, and has played at several other major festivals, including Toronto, where it screened in the Discovery section. It also plays at this month’s Chicago Film Festival.

Pic was produced by Thor Sigurjonsson and Skuli Fr. Malmquist for Iceland’s Zik Zak Filmworks, and Egil Dennerline for Denmark’s Fine & Mellow Prods. TrustNordisk is handling foreign sales.

The film was backed by New Danish Screen, Icelandic Film Center and Nordic Film and TV Fond.

Runarsson’s 2005 short film “Last Farm” was nominated for an Academy Award. His 2008 short “2 Birds” played in competish at Cannes.
