Ghent honors Norman Jewison

Helmer to receive Joseph Plateau Award

Norman Jewison, the director behind “In the Heat of the Night,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Moonstruck,” will receive the Joseph Plateau Award at the 38th Ghent Film Festival, running Oct. 11-22.

According to fest organizers, the kudo goes to those “whose achievements have earned them a distinct place in the history of international filmmaking.”

Past recipients include Catherine Deneuve, Morgan Freeman, Jeanne Moreau, Vanessa Redgrave, Mike Leigh, Jim Sheridan, Robert Altman and Sydney Pollack, among others.

Throughout his five-decade long career as a director-producer, Jewison has been nominated for seven Oscars. He was honored with the Academy’s Irving Thalberg award in 1999 and the DGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

Patrick Duynslaegher, artistic director of the fest, will conduct a Q&A with Jewison at the Kinepolis 8 at 4 p.m. on Oct. 21, to be followed by a screening of “The Thomas Crown Affair.”
