No complaints from me about today’s juicy rumor that Ricky Gervais is in talks to take on the hosting gig for the Golden Globes again this year. A well-placed source close to the HFPA (mysterious!) confirmed this afternoon to Variety that comedian and creator of “The Office” is discussing the possibility of being onstage at the Beverly Hilton poking fun at Hollywood and generally offending people who lack a sense of humor.
This isn’t the first time this rumor has circulated. Back in August, it sounded like Gervais was a shoo-in, but then NBC and the HFPA quelched the story.
You’ll recall that Gervais raised the ire of many people in town when he dared, dared!, to have a few laughs at the expense of the well-known faces in the audience, but it seems that the HFPA enjoyed all of the attention far more than it let on initially. Don’t forget that he said about then-head Philip Berk: “I had to help the HFPA president off the toilet and pop his teeth back in!” No doubt Gervais insisted on creative freedom for this year, so prepare for another round of jokes you feel embarrassed to laugh at, such as referring to Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad and introducing Robert Downey Jr. as “better know for his stays at the Betty Ford Clinic and the L.A. County Jail.”
