Contender: ‘Albert Nobbs’

Glenn Close’s commitment to her title character in “Albert Nobbs” appears as unrelenting as her decades-long efforts to bring the film to the bigscreen. That intensity, combined with an unmistakable vulnerability, underscores the latest awards case for Close, a five-time Oscar nominee.

Close’s first Oscar-nommed performance, for “The World According to Garp,” came in 1982, the same year she took on (and fell in love with) the role of Nobbs Off Broadway, playing a woman who disguises herself as a man in order to forge a career as a butler in 19th-century Britain.

As an initial harbinger for her “Nobbs” award chances, Close won the actress prize at October’s Tokyo Film Festival. But Close is not alone among “Nobbs” acting contenders. Voters who go out of their way to watch what Variety called “a career-crowning role for Glenn Close” will also discover her cross-dressing co-star, Janet McTeer (a lead actress finalist for 1999’s “Tumbleweeds”), in a riveting supporting performance that is a linchpin to the film’s plot.

Should the “Nobbs” screenplay (directed by Rodrigo Garcia) earn any kudos, Close would also own a piece of that prize.

She shared scribe credit with Gabriella Prekop and John Banville, along with Istvan Szavo for story, in adapting the novella from George Moore.
