Online service branches into summer fests
With Coachella and Bonnaroo under its belt, YouTube will live stream this year’s Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits fests.
Lollapalooza, now in its 20th year, returns to Chicago’s Grant Park on Aug. 5-7, while ACL will celebrate its 10th anniversary Sept. 16-18 at Austin’s Zilker Field. Lollapalooza is completely sold out, and tickets are available for Sunday’s ACL date only.
With many fans unwilling or unable to make the trek to far-flung, high-ticket festivals, YouTube has become an increasingly important online player, and is branching into the summer touring season with the new ventures, both of which are promoted by C3 Presents.
Dell and Advanced Micro Devices will sponsor the streaming events.
YouTube’s music marketing programs manager Dana Vetter said, “This allows us to showcase multiple artists each day, which is really exciting to users. And we can hope to expect longer viewing times from people who catch one set and trickle into the next one.”
This year’s Lollapalooza will be headlined by Eminem, Foo Fighters, Muse, My Morning Jacket and Coldplay. The latter two acts will also appear at ACL, where Kanye West, Stevie Wonder and Arcade Fire are also toplining.
