Bollywood VOD service to be ad funded

LONDON — Yahoo India launched Movieplex, a free video on demand service, on Tuesday.

Yahoo is working with Indian studios to bring more than 1,000 Bollywood films to the service, which will be funded by advertising. Films now available include ”Rock On,” ”Rann” and ”Dil To Baccha Hai Ji.”

Yahoo India managing director Arun Tadanki said: ”With the increasing demand for online video, both consumers and content providers are looking for a trusted destination where quality content can be consumed in a piracy-free environment at their leisure.”

Indians are now spoiled for choice since YouTube India launched a similar free online movie channel in June, and studios like Rajshri Productions and Shemaroo Entertainment also offer most of their libraries online free of charge.

Some 30 million Indians spend 9.1 billion minutes watching 1.7 billion online videos each month, according to a report released by digital business analysts ComScore in March.
