Startups can thrive in giants footsteps

'Technology All-Stars' talk up platforms, tools

For small startups looking to make a big impact, finding a way to aid a larger company can be key, according to panelists at Friday’s “Next Generation of Technology All-Stars” session of Variety’s Venture Capital and New Media Summit.

“It’s being able to offer the big guy something they haven’t done yet,” said Jay Samit, CEO of SocialVibe. “Every large organization is so busy trying to do their day job.”

“Next” panelists at the BevHilton included James DeJulio, president and co-founder of Tongal; Lucien Vattel, CEO of GameDesk, Brian Wong, CEO of kiip; Shahid Khan, chairman and strategist of MediaMorph; Dan Scheinman, advisory board member at tango.me and independent member of the board of directors of Auryn; Jude Gomila, CEO of heyzap; and Ara Katz, VP of creative and celebrity partnerships at BeachMint.

Panel was moderated by UTA head of digital media Brent Weinstein.

The group also emphasized the importance of fitting content for the platforms available, not just trying to figure out new ways to distribute product.

“The real billion-dollar opportunity is how you take these new tools that are out there and how do you create new content types for these tools?” Scheinman said.

Summit, which included panelists from Hollywood and Silicon Valley, explored how the investment community drives technological innovation affecting the entertainment industry.
