South Korea: Country adding screens as locals sign on

Cannes 3D Report: South Korea

South Korea’s 3D movie market is soaring. According to the Korean Film Council, 26 3D movies were released in 2010 and took in $175 million, an estimated 16.5% of the B.O. total.

The number of 3D screens rocketed as well, with some 562 screens built in 2010, according to KOFIC, around 28% out of 2,003 screens nationwide, plus a total 11 4D screens.

But 3D B.O. has cooled in 2011. Despite more than 13 3D movies released in the first quarter, only “Gulliver’s Travels” hit the top 10 list with a $12.7 million cume.

Nevertheless, local producers are expecting big things from 3D content. The Korean music business is using the format to showcase its acts via concert movies, such as Big Bang’s “Big Show 3D” and Super Junior’s “Super Show 3D.” Local 3D movies are set for the summer, with CJ E&M’s action thriller “Sector 7” first up. Other 3D pics are also in the pipeline, including dance movie “Hype Nation,” Korean-U.S. co-production, and helmer Kim Yong-hwa’s (“Take-Off”) baseball movie “Mr. Go.”

Animation and TV are also being swept up by 3D. At Mip TV, Korean broadcasters inked 3D content deals worth $900,000, while KBS-TV has started producing the 3D TV drama “Smart Action.” Aggressive policies by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism target cultivating talent in 3D, while its leading hardware makes, such as Samsung and LG, are the world leaders in 3D TVs. – — Han Sunhee
