Rainmaker, Image Systems, DirecTV, Panasonic make news

Animation studio Rainmaker Entertainment is partnering with comedian Harland Williams to develop and produce an original animated feature based on the adventures of the Ting and Juma, two mascots featured in a number of Rainmaker-produced animation shorts. The characters were first introduced in “Stumped,” a short unveiled at 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Film restorer and distributor The Criterion Collection has purchased a Phoenix Finish system from Image Systems (formerly Digital Vision), a developer of high-resolution image processing, film scanning and motion analysis technology. The system will become central to Criterion’s restoration activities of classic and iconic films.

DirecTV, and Panasonic will host a 3D film “invitational” that will give six filmmakers the chance to train on 3D gear and create a short film funded by the two companies. All six films will premiere on DirecTV’s 3D channel, n3D, and will be screened at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles. The winner will receive a $25,000 prize. Technicolor will also present an award and a $5,000 prize.
