Online entertainment producer Break Media has paired with screenwriting site Scripped to launch “Break’s Big Break,” a contest for aspiring scribes that Ed Burns and Steven De Souza will judge.

The winner’s script will be produced with Break’s inhouse production studio, Creative Lab, as a Break Original. Break.com will feature and promote the short. Five finalists will receive $500.

Submissions will be taken on Scripped.com over the next six weeks. Scripped is an online community for screenwriters.

“Break has always been a breeding ground for aspiring writers, directors and actors and is increasingly becoming an outlet for established Hollywood talent to experiment with new ideas,” said Jonathan Small, senior VP of editorial and programming for Break. “With our extensive inhouse video production capabilities and experience, we have the ability to take an idea from inception to casting to filming to distribution quickly and efficiently.”

Small will also judge the competish with Greg Siegel, Break’s senior VP of entertainment development; Danila Koverman, the company’s VP of production; and Andy Signore, lead creative of original content.

Contest is part of Break’s effort to produce more original content this year, including more than 1,000 videos.

Winning scripts and writers will be unveiled on Scripped on June 1, with the first short bowing later that month.
