Pact covers 'Hobbit' pix, 'Hansel,' 'Zookeeper'
LONDON — MGM Studios has inked a multi-year licensing agreement with Netflix to stream its feature pics in Blighty and Ireland.
Deal will see MGM titles be made available for Netflix members in the two countries to watch instantly in the pay TV window on televisions, tablets, game consoles, computers and mobile phones.
Upcoming MGM titles such as “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” “Zookeeper” and “21 Jump Street,” toplining Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, will all be available exclusively on Netflix within one year of their theatrical release.
Catalog titles such as “Capote,” “Fargo,” “The Usual Suspects,” “West Side Story” and “The Amityville Horror” will also be available on the service. Netflix announced formally last month that it would be launching its service in the U.K. and Ireland in early 2012 after Variety revealed the news this summer (Variety, July 15, 2011).
Indie distribs Lionsgate U.K. and Alliance Pictures’ Brit arm Momentum Pictures have also signed up to the service, making a selection of their titles available exclusively during the pay TV window.
