Streaming service to offer films, TV shows to gamers

LONDON — Web streaming service Lovefilm has struck a deal with Microsoft to offer its films and TV shows via Xbox Live in the U.K. and Germany.

The Lovefilm Player is already available via PC, iPad, PlayStation 3 and Internet-connected TVs.

Lovefilm will become an official Xbox Live integrated service provider, with customers able to access content using the Kinect for Xbox 360 motion controller.

“We’re proud to be part of Microsoft’s expansion into the entertainment space and confident it will fuel our ambition to become Europe’s largest membership entertainment service,” said Lovefilm CEO Simon Calver.

Lovefilm rents DVDs by mail as well as streaming content over the Web under a single subscription deal. It has recently expanded its library via exclusive deals with U.K. independent distributors such as eOne, which releases the “Twilight” franchise, and Studiocanal, the company behind “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”
