Sector falls 4% to $2.9 billion

Tokyo — DVD sales in Japan in 2010 dipped for the fifth straight year, coming in at $2.9 billion, down 4% on 2009, according to the Oricon entertainment ratings service.

Blu-ray disc sales almost doubled from $360 million to $674 million, while Blu-ray’s share of total sales rose from 9.4% to 18.9%.

The biggest selling Blu-ray title was the toon, “Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance,” with $33.9 million.

The biggest genre on Blu-ray and DVD was toons, accounting for 62.7% of Blu-ray sales and 22.5% of DVD sales.
